A port city is important to the economy of the entire country and is a crucial driver of growth in its own region. With its strong identity, it attracts both domestic and foreign investment and business establishments. Port operations also create opportunities to transform former harbour areas into new and attractive urban districts. Here, we compare developments in Gothenburg, Sweden’s most important port city, with Rotterdam in the Netherlands, home to Europe’s largest port. We take a closer look at the work of attracting investment, current projects, and discuss the importance of identity in the development process.
